Saina Nehwal Reaffirms BJP Support, Signals Possible Electoral Debut
New Delhi, August 24: Former world No. 1 badminton player Saina Nehwal has reaffirmed her support for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and indicated that she could consider contesting an Assembly or Lok Sabha election in the future.
Speaking at the News24 Bharat Nirman Summit 2026, Nehwal said she wants to contribute to the country beyond her sporting career. However, she clarified that she has not yet taken a final decision on contesting an election.
Nehwal, who joined the BJP in 2020, also praised the government’s focus on sports and athletes. She highlighted improvements in India’s sporting ecosystem, including greater attention to training, coaching, sports science and athlete support.
Her remarks have triggered fresh speculation about a possible entry into electoral politics. However, Nehwal has not announced a constituency, election or candidature.
The Olympic medallist has been associated with public issues since joining the BJP and has previously spoken in support of the government’s initiatives for athletes and sports development.
For now, her comments signal an interest in a future political role rather than a confirmed electoral candidature.
